The Boeing Apache Longbow attack helicopter is named after the millimeter-wave radar mounted on top of the rotor mast. The Apache Longbow is an improved and upgraded version of the AH-64A helicopter. The radar being mounted above the rotors gives the Apache AH-64D Longbow helicopter a major advantage. The Longbow radar can see through fog, smoke and rain to acquire a clear 360 degree electronic picture of the entire battlefield. The fire control radar can locate, classify and prioritize more than 128 targets, in any weather condition. The radar selects targets for the AGM-114D Longbow missiles which can be fired in full 'fire-and-forget' mode up to ranges of almost 8 miles. Unlike its predecessor, the AH-64A Apache, Longbows can now remain masked behind terrain deep behind enemy lines as it acquires and engages the enemy. “The Angel of Death”
