Many years ago, I picked up a very secondhand book at a very secondhand bookstore that contained a bookplate bearing a quotation by Stephen Grellet. It summed up the kind of person I wanted to be. It read “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again.”Everyone has a few things they well and truly believe in. Things that define who they are. I believe in free and open access to information. I believe in doing the right thing, no matter how much more difficult it might be. I believe in helping people. This is why I became a librarian. That being said, as a Librarian to the Damned, the Universe has a wicked sense of humor.
