The Winners – 2011 Valentine’s Day Design Contest

These are the winning designs of the 2011 Valentine’s Day Design Contest. The winning designs will be prominently featured throughout Spreadshirt.com homepage and the Spreadshirt Designer. The designers will also receive a voucher for one free shirt ($35 value – see previous post about rules and prizes).

The Winners

Honorable Mentions

There were many great designs submitted to the contest but we could only choose 3 winners. Therefore we’ve decided to award 3 Honorable Mentions in this contest. For each design we will award a $35 voucher to each honorably mentioned designer.

  2. Agreeing with the above, I find it necessary to comment. I completely immersed my creativity into this contest, and it’s a disappointment as I read the contest criteria carefully and made sure to follow the contest and meet the rules.

PS: To all Passionate Designers: Happy Valentine’s Day !

  3. 2. Versatility (Invites customization – provokes thought for adding text or multiple designs)
    ————————————————-

None of the designs really uses this – so why did you put it as a guideline, when clearly you havent been judging any winning designs on it?

Tut (the user) could have added “and I wont work for nobody but INSERT A NAME HERE” on his “Love Machine t-shirt”, but he didnt. And noone else of the choosen ones did.

    3. Market Appeal (Immediately attracts attention from the viewer)
    ————————
Since this is subjective I cant judge on this, just say that I disagree. The above designs are very average. I think customers look for something more unique than just copies of old designs they can find elsewhere.

    4. Applicability to Apparel (Design can be used on a wide variety of apparel items)
    —————————
Well looks like they could all fit on whatever you choose. Cant disagree here, but so did most of the 300 designs submitted

    5. Production (Vector designs are preferred)
    —————————-
The same thing here. Looks like vectors, but a very uncreative use of them. Vectors are really good for drawings, colours.. This is below average use in my opinion..

  4. Then on to the criteria for selection. Let me address them 1 by 1. You put up:

    1. Creativity and Originality (New and previously unsubmitted designs have advantage)
    ————————————————
Only very few designs very original – if any. A quick search on Google shows the following:

    Design no. 2: https://www.google.com/images?q=candle+heart+clipart

Lots of heart + candle designs

    Design no. 3: https://www.google.com/images?q=love+machine+t-shirt

    Lots of love machine designs

    Design no. 5: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2007/03/ft-period-table-element-1-love/

This idea dates at least back to 2007.

It might not be that they have been posted on Spreadshirt.com before, but would a “FBI – Female Body Inspector” motive win original design just because it havent been featured on the site? – I hope not. Originality should be seen in a broad perspective. Especially in a time where everybody copies everything. Its to mock those participants in this competition who spend a lot of time and hard work to come up with something original.

  5. Hi guys

Well first I all I want to say that its always okay to be beaten in a competition if you feel that the guys winning really deserves it.
Sometimes – that does not happen – and then you think of your own designs, but also (more importantly) you think of the many submissions from competitors you had as favourites, but didnt win.

So its not just about not having your own stuff selected, you want the truely awesome designs to win no matter who made them.. 🙂

Of course any competition is always a matter of personal preferences – taste if you will. Therefore there would be no point in critizicing the chosen motives on that ground.

That said I agree with everyone else that I don’t see any connection at all between the criteria you guys put up to begin with and what was selected. I’ll come to that in a second, but first I also find it disturbing that the admin of the competition openly supported 2 of the designs above (from the same user) in this thread in the forums:

Spreadshirt Staff should in no way do such a thing. Im sorry but I’ll be sending a complain to the mothership in Leipzig. Its simply not okay.

  6. Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to let everyone know that we actually had 4 ‘judges’ pick and vote on the designs and we used the judging system described in the post announcing this contest. When we have the next design contest we will have different judges so that there is a versatility to the designs that are picked, however they will also be required to judge them from similar perspective (as described in previous post)

  7. The German spreadshirt had the same contest and at least they chose somewhat likeable designs. So maybe on US side of it someone was told, go and pick! And this someone probably thought “bugger, I have better things to do with my life” and just picked whatever… without even looking…

  8. I’m not angry but I kinda agree! Its mostly my fault that I found out about it late but I submitted yesterday and I like to believe I got over looked. I’m not saying I should’ve won, but it’s cool I guess, anybody interested in checkout my design come though to me store.

AND PLEASE HURRY UP WITH THOSE PILLOW CASES!!!

  9. I have to agree – this is not fair. Many of the chosen designs were submitted very early. It seems like the judges already decided long ago. None of the designs above look very good. The heart made out of letters especially – it is cold and has absolutely no appeal. There were around 100 much warmer, funnier and more sellable designs. Please post the decision background for choosing these designs. I can understand why people are disappointed..

  10. eh… I wonder if the judges actually looked at those more than 300 designs, for what it looks like the winners were picked at random…
