Search Engine Optimization tips – part 1

blog_seo_US

Today, our Search Engine Optimiztion (SEO) team is bringing you some SEO tips. SEO tips and tricks will help optimize the content on your site. Google and other search engines will be able to find your site more easily and you will rank you higher as a result, depending on the products and keywords you choose to focus on.

Before we get in to SEO, it’s important to understand how Google works. Google’s database called the “index”, is fed by a large number of “crawlers” (also known as “spiders”), who spend their time browsing the Web in order to inventory keywords and content on all websites. When someone enters a query on Google, let’s say “personalized T-shirts”, Google’s algorithm comes into play, analyzing and ranking every pertinent result that will match the keyword that was entered. The exact algorithm is unknown to the public, but we do know some of the factors that help a page rank on the result pages (and we’re letting you in on the inside info!).

What factors help Google find your site and help it rank higher? Here are some tips to help you improve your shop. There are more to come in future blog posts, so keep your eyes open 😉

1. Define your brand
Give a name to your shop and state in very certain terms what you specialize in. For example: nerd t-shirts and sweatshirts. It will be easier for you to market your brand and for your fans to remember you when they’re looking for you.

2. Metadata
What is metadata? Metadata is the description and keywords used to describe a web page’s content. It’s the boldfaced blue page title and underneath information that you see on Google results pages. It’s also how Google and other search engines find and classify your page.

Log into your Spreadshirt account and click “Shop”, then “Info & Meta”. Name your shop and add a description. Scroll down to ‘metadata’ and enter a title and a description. This information will be visible on Google’s search result pages. You shouldn’t have a title any longer than 70 characters, or a description any longer than 156 characters (spaces included). Previews of how your metadata will appear can be seen using a tool like this.

Make sure the information is engaging and accurate to invite more clicks. Your metadata should include your shop’s focus through the use of keywords. If you specialize in “ugly tank tops”, then make sure that those keywords and different variations appear in all elements mentioned above.

3. Your products
Give each of your products a unique name and description. Google is not a big fan of duplicate content. Help the algorithm determine the differences between your products and make them look appealing to your visitors.

4. Google Panda and the value of your content.
Google Panda is a change to Google’s search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February of 2011 and updated most recently on May, 19th of this year. What’s important to keep in mind, here, is that Google is trying to emphasize that “good” content matters more. This means that smaller, editorial websites with specialized content and a lot of information are more likely to rank higher for certain keywords than big websites with poor or no content at all. What does this mean for you? If your shop is embedded in your own website, you should create content that brings value to the reader. The longer the post and the more information it contains, the better the quality (according to Google and Panda). You should also structure your content with HTML using headlines, sub-headlines, words in bold and bullet points. You will help the reader and Google see exactly what in your content is the most important (including your keywords). If you don’t know how to use HTML, you can find a quick tutorial on this website.

5. Submit your URL to search engines
If the popular search engines don’t know about your site, it’s going to be awfully difficult to rank! Don’t wait until web crawlers find you – it might take ages. Enter here to submit your site to Google and here to submit your site to Bing.

That’s it for today! Please do not hesitate to comment on this post if you have any doubts. We will be back very soon, with SEO tips part two: how to increase your rankings and traffic by improving your shop’s SEO reputation.

SEOly yours,
Spreadshirt’s SEO team.
