We had many spooky and spectacular entries in this year’s Halloween Design Contest, but as we all know, there can only be one winner. Ladies and gentlemen…. put your hands together for the one… the only… Jetilla Lewis and her entry “Horror Cat”. Read Spreadshirt’s exclusive interview with Jetilla and learn what inspired her to enter and where, exactly, the Horror Cat got its start.
1. Tell us, Jetilla, what animal or thing best describes you?
I think the angler fish best describes me. We’re both scary, weird, live in the dark and have sweet underbites.
2. What was the main incentive that made you take part in the design contest?
I love Halloween! It’s my favorite holiday. I’ve had this idea for a cat skeleton design, so when I saw that Spreadshirt was having a Halloween contest, I thought it was the perfect time to finally draw it.
3. Do you have a shop with Spreadshirt? If so, which one?
Yes, I have two shops. The first one is Worst Creations, and my newest shop is Worst Cats.
4. Where do you get the inspiration for your designs?
My designs are inspired by things I like and what I think would make a good looking shirt. A friend of mine came up with the idea for both saint designs for tattoos she wanted. After I finished drawing them, I really liked how they came out, so I got her permission to put them up in my shop.
5. Are there any drafts or other templates of your Halloween designs that you feel like sharing with us?
No, I only had this one idea. Maybe next year I’ll make a couple more Halloween-themed designs.
6. How about a piece of advice for other shop partners – what would that be?
Design things you like! Make designs with staying power. I think it’s good to create something that someone would want to buy 5 to 10 years from now.
7. Some people have a mantra that they follow. Do you have such a leitmotif?
My personal mantra? “Don’t make eye contact, don’t make eye contact, don’t make eye contact…”
