Design Inspiration Special: International Women’s Day on March 8

Women’s equality has always been an issue. In our day and age, it’s taking the spotlight. Time to support this movement with your designs.

More than a trend: Strong designs for women

Designs featuring catchy slogans such as “Girl Power”, “Smash the Patriarchy” or “Empowered Women Empower Women” are in vogue. It’s not a trend that’s going to go away anytime soon, because women’s rights and empowerment have been such a focal point in recent years. With discussion of non-binary gender identities, #MeToo and the gender pay gap becoming mainstream, beautiful and empowering T-shirt designs focused on women and emancipation are now more in demand than ever.

Show that women’s empowerment is important to you and your brand and create some powerful designs now in time for Women’s Day on March 8th or Women’s History Month in March.

#BreaktheBias on March 8th

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is #BreaktheBias. The hashtag expresses the importance of breaking down prejudices and historical structures to create gender equity and become more inclusive.

But #BreaktheBias is also meant to highlight how sexist the world still is, and that the fight for women’s rights is no picnic.

For your designs: in addition to the hashtag, you can also express #BreaktheBias with a pose this year: Arms crossed in front of your body forming an X.

Where does International Women’s Day come from and what does it mean?

About 100 years ago, most women around the world were not allowed to vote, get divorced, or go to work without their husband’s permission. Today, many women are emancipated, others are still deeply oppressed, and all are living under a patriarchal system that, in many ways, works to their disadvantage.

So on March 8, we celebrate, first and foremost, the achievements of women’s rights movements over the past 100 years – while also highlighting how much work there is left to do.

And you can join in by creating feminist designs with these symbols, figures and colors symbolizing women’s struggle for equality:

Ideas for empowering designs

Illustration + Quote: countless strong women of the world have shared their wisdom and you can find heaps of inspiring quotes online. Combine a fitting illustration with a quote for an empowering shirt.

Portraits of famous women: Illustrate your role model or a strong representative of women’s rights and inspire other fans.

Diversity: Show the diversity and beauty of women! Stand for body positivity and against racism.

Women’s Day: Women’s Day itself and the date, March 8th, can also be part of your design.

Flowers: There are a lot of stereotypes surrounding women and flowers. But in your design, flowers can be a potent symbol of life, strength and beauty and can therefore be an empowering symbol.

Venus: The Venus symbol shows the hand mirror of Venus, the goddess of love. It is a sign of beauty and strength.

Fist: The raised fist is a well-known symbol for the struggle for justice.

Us: Women’s Day is not about isolated causes. Any cause for justice and against oppression should be supported by all women. So use lots of fists and show different women to convey the “we” feeling in your design.
