Total solar eclipse happens when the moon gets between the Sun and the Earth and blocks all or just a part of the Sun. For the solar eclipse on August 21st, the moon will completely block the Sun for around two minutes and 40 seconds. No matter in which location along the so-called path of totality you are. But if you move toward the edges of the path, the duration of the total eclipse will decrease accordingly. If you stand at one of the edges of the path, it might last only a few seconds.
The “Great American Solar Eclipse” will darken the skies along the path of totality all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, through 14 states, along a stretch of land about 70 miles wide. People who decide to travel to these regions of the States for this event are surely in for an unforgettable, possibly once in a lifetime experience, as the last time the US saw a total solar eclipse was in 1979. And the next total solar eclipse visible in the United States will be on April 8, 2024.
