Rejoice We Conquer
Based on ancient Greek vase paintings, this shirt depicts a running warrior accompanied with the Greek words χαίρετε νικῶμεν (chairete nikomen), which the 19th-century poet, Robert Browning, translated to “Rejoice, we conquer!” According to Lucian (Pro lapsu inter salutandum 3), these were the last words spoken by Philippides (also known as Pheidippides), before he collapsed dead after running from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to report the Greeks’ victory over the Persians. Robert Browning's 1879 poem "Pheidippides" helped to inspire the inclusion of a run from Marathon to Athens in the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896. Although the historical accuracy of this account is rather questionable, it still makes for a dramatic story and provides a great slogan. So go forth marathoners and conquer! (Just try not to keel over after you finish.)
