We all think that our pets are special, but just wait until we introduce you to Tuna! Courtney Dasher, mother of Tuna, an adorable 2 year old Chiweenie seized the opportunity to show off her unique pet and make him an Instagram sensation. Courtney rescued Tuna from an animal shelter back in 2011 and since the creation of his online store, has given back to animals still looking for homes by donating a portion of the sales from the Tuna Melts My Heart Shop to the ASPCA. Tuna boasts a following of close to 400,000 followers on his Instagram account and recently was featured on Good Morning America. We had a quick chat with Courtney to find out a little more about Tuna including how he rose to fame and what his summer plans are.
What made you decide to start sharing photos of Tuna and ultimately create a site dedicated to him? When I finally decided to set up an account, I made the decision that I would only post pictures of Tuna. I had him for a year before I joined Instagram so I had already acquired a vast collection of photos. He was always so cooperative and patient when I took his picture, so I knew that I would generate enough to post one a day, which is what I have been doing since Nov 2011. I call it the “Daily Tuna Special.” Every photo he takes is funny and endearing so I saw it as an opportunity to make people laugh and to bring them joy! That’s why I continue to post every day.
Is Tuna recognized when out in public? There have been a few occasions where he has been recognized when we were out but not very often. My favorite so far was when we were in Central Park and a 4-year-old little boy asked if he could “walk my dog.” As I was getting him situated, I said “come here Tuna” and the little boy’s dad exclaimed “Tuna Tuna? Instagram Tuna?” I thought it was so sweet!
Have you made the donation to the ASPCA yet? I have! I also gave his original rescuer a check when I went to see her a few weeks ago. I wrote her a card saying that it was from his followers around the world who love Tuna. When she noticed the card the following day, she was overwhelmed with gratefulness! I’m speaking with a few other smaller private rescue groups that could use more financial assistance as well.
What is Tuna’s favorite meal? Any other dog food besides his own J He actually loves his food (Nutro small bites,) but if he’s over a (dog) friends, he goes right for their bowl and devours it all. I think that’s typical. He also loves popcorn and any kind of cheese. Ps. He doesn’t have any trouble eating because he chews with his molars. It’s a common question so I wanted to address it.
Who is Tuna’s celebrity crush? His alien doll Colin. He’s a star in Tuna’s eyes!!!
Is Tuna an early riser or night owl? He wakes up around 7 to go outside, but he comes right back in, burrows under the covers, and watches me get ready for work until his eyes get heavy, and then he’s back to sleeping 😉
How does Tuna plan to spend his summer? He loves car rides, dog parks and the beach, so we will probably be doing a lot of that
